I went through an experience recently where I did good deeds for someone, and was still not treated very well. It made me realize that when we do good, we do attract good back, but not always from the person we do good to. Sometimes we can do the right thing, or the good thing and that person based on the level of goodness they live on, may still not appreciate us, and may even do us wrong.
This happened to Jesus and Joseph Smith all the time. Think about how Jesus came here, to save, heal, love, guide and atone for the sins of the very people who persecuted Him and killed Him. Joseph Smith restored Jesus's church, and brought the full Gospel, and restored the Kingdom of God on earth for the very people that also persecuted and killed him. So it could look like they did such good, yet were given back abuse, pain and even death. Where is the justice in this? What happened to we reap what we sow?
Ultimately in life I know that when we do good, we do reap the good rewards. One of the rewards is the happy, peaceful feeling we get from doing good. Truly doing good deeds fills us with the Spirit of God, and fills us with the Light.
This in itself makes it worth it. There is no greater happiness than living righteously. Also, I have noticed that I do get blessed sometimes not by the person I have blessed but by others, in quite surprising ways. The more good we do, the more happiness we fill ourselves up with, the higher level we live on. We make our souls very happy when we do good, when we do what is right. There truly is no greater gift we can give ourselves, there is no greater form of self love we can bestow upon ourselves than doing good, and doing what is right.
I seek to do good, do what's right when it is before me, knowing that as I do this, I am not only blessing others, but blessing myself as well.
